The sign reads:
"Stairs Carved by Meltwater
You are standing on an ancient Snake River embankment.
Swollen with ice-age glacial meltwaters, the river carved,
a wide twisting channel across the valley millions of
years ago. The waters stripped away soil and left behind
cobbles and gravels to form an outwash plain. The river
later formed a single channel that cut down into the plain.
Each step or terrace below you represents a time when
the river stopped cutting down. The highest banks represent
the oldest channel. The lower and youngest banks border
the modern Snake River, which continues to cut down and
erode the landscape."
