Oakmeadowford Bridge No 48 is located near to Consall Forge where the Caldon Canal merges with the River Churnet.
It is brick built bridge situated next to Lock 16 and allows pedestrians using the tow path to cross over the canal.There is a red indicator on the bridge that shows if the river is safe to travel on and there is a winding hole at the bridge if things look a little rough.
The Caldon Canal is 17 miles (27 km) long, has 17 locks, 3 operational lift-bridges and one tunnel and runs from Etruria in central Stoke-on-Trent to Froghall in Staffordshire.
The Caldon Canal is a branch of the Trent and Mersey Canal and was built between Etruria and Froghall in 1776 at a cost of £23,560 and opened in 1779. It was built specifically to carry limestone from the quarries at Cauldon Low, near Froghall to Stoke-on-Trent.
