"Some 13 miles north-west of Leicester lies the small village of Heather (pronounced ‘Heether’). Its nearest larger neighbour Ibstock is a couple of miles to the south-east. In the Domesday book of 1086 the village is called Hadre meaning the heathlands. It has seen coal mining and brick works in its past and is situated next to the Sence Valley Country Park which was home to a large open cast coal mine which removed 8 million tonnes of coal. It has now been landscaped with a lake, trees and open land with plenty of walks.

"Parish Church of early C14, restored 1847, including addition of new chancel and N. aisle, by Henry Isaac Stevens of Derby, in sympathy with medieval character of church. Well coursed grey-green sandstone, heavily tooled. West tower (originally with spire) with gargoyles and thin corner pinnacles. Nave with low clerestory with square headed paired tracery lights, and 2 aisles with simple tracery windows. Curvilinear tracery elsewhere. Interior has nave arcade with heavy abaci to piers, and wall monument in chancel, marble, to Stephen Everard, 1615, with relief figures of family. Series of slate headstones in churchyard."
