The memorial was originally erected on Armistace day, November 11th 1929 for those who fell in World War I. The inscriptions on the obelisk reads '1914-1918', however, there is a second inscription, 1939-1945 added by the 'Penang Veterans Association' to the rear of the monument.
A side plaque on black marble is inscribed with all the Wars & Conflicts Commemorated:
