Industrial activity for the production of lime on the island of Fuerteventura was at its peak from the 19th century until the end of the decade of the sixties in the 20th century, when it was gradually replaced by the production of cement.
The limestone extracted here was made up of a high percentage of calcic carbonate /remains of marine skeletons and shells) which, when burned, produced high quality lime that was used to limewash or whitewash different buildings. Unburnt limestone was also marketed.
