On February 14, 1959, a large sundial was created on the central plaza of Carefree, Arizona. The area is now part of the Desert Garden, a four acre garden that surrounds the sundial and includes sculptures, fountains and playgrounds. The town of Carefree was created in the 1950's as a retirement community far removed from urban Phoenix. The sundial was one of the attractions used to lure people to the community. It still does. The time capsule was placed on February 14, 2012, the centennial of Arizona's statehood. It is to be opened on February 14, 2059, the centennial of the sundial. The plaque reads
