Built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Sioule, Rochefort built between 1150 and 1250 was part of the military system of the fief of the lords of Bourbon.
Its special military architecture did not include any residential or sumptuous development. It was only in the 17th century that a main building was built inside the fortifications and the salons were created in the purest Louis XIII style.
In 1890, under the leadership of the architect Moreau, the castle was restored and a closed gallery was created.

Édifié sur un éperon rocheux dominant la Sioule, Rochefort construit entre 1150 et 1250 faisait partie du dispositif militaire du fief des seigneurs de Bourbon.
Son architecture spécialement militaire ne comprenait aucun aménagement résidentiel ni somptuaire. Ce n'est qu'au XVIIe qu'un corps de logis fut construit à l'intérieur des fortifications et que les salons furent créés dans le plus pur style Louis XIII.
En 1890, sous la conduite de l'architecte Moreau, le château fut restauré et une galerie fermée fut créée.
