This bridge dedication plaque contains the construction dates for the Donner Summit Bridge of 1925 to 1926.
Before the Donner Summit Bridge (Rainbow Bridge) was built the old Lincoln Highway wound steeply down Donner Summit with grades as high as 18%. The new alignment of the Lincoln Highway, of which the Donner Summit Bridge was part of resulted in maximum grades of 7%. The Donner Summit Bridge was a common design for the 1920’s but was also unique because it had a grade and a compound curve which had never been done before.
