Louis Lunch was established by Louis Lassen in a downtown location near Yale University in 1895. They claim to have created the first hamburger to accommodate a harried customer. According to their website:
"One day in 1900, a gentleman hurriedly walked into Louis' Lunch and told proprietor Louis Lassen he was in a rush and wanted something he could eat on the run. In an instant, Louis placed his own blend of ground steak trimmings between two slices of toast and sent the gentleman on his way. And so, the most recognizable American sandwich was born."
If you order the original hamburger, cost $6, do not expect to find the usual condiments - ketchup, mustard, relish, etc. The proprietor, Jeff Lassen, the grandson of Louis Lassen, maintains the family tradition. The only acceptable additions to the hamburger are cheese, onion and tomato. Furthermore they operate a cash only business. No credit cards, no Apple Pay, so leave your plastic cards or iPhone in your pocket.
