EN: The monument stands at the northern end of the old fire pool in the center of Rünenberg. It is a large erratic block, which is partially overgrown with plants. On the front is a round metal relief of the portrait of Sutter. A plaque below reads: "General Johann August Sutter of Rünenberg / founder of New Helvetia 1803-1880".
Johann (later John) August Sutter is the most famous citizen of Rünenberg. As a pioneer of the settlement of California and especially his tragic story in the gold rush of the 1840s are world famous. Even today, dozens of streets, schools, and even mountains and a whole district are named after him in California, but also elsewhere.
DE: Das Denkmal steht am nördlichen Ende des alten Feuerwehrteichs im Zentrum von Rünenberg. Es ist ein grosser Findling, der teilweise von Pflanzen bewachsen ist. An der Vorderseite ist ein rundes Metallrelief des Porträts von Sutter angebracht. Darunter steht: "General Johann August Sutter von Rünenberg / Gründer von Neu-Helvertien 1803-1880".
Johann (später John) August Sutter ist der berühmteste Bürger von Rünenberg. Als Pionier der Besiedlung Kaliforniens und besonders seine tragische Geschichte im Goldrausch der 1840er Jahre sind weltberühmt. Noch heute sind in Kalifornien, aber auch anderswo, dutzende von Strassen, Schulen, und sogar Berge und ein ganzer Bezirk nach ihm benannt.
