Why "Crocodile"?

The term "crocodile" refers to electric locomotives, so called because of their shape and probably the green livery of the first units put into service in Switzerland from 1919.

These powerful locomotives were designed to pull heavy trains of freight on the steep slopes of the Swiss network, especially on the Gotthard line between Lucerne and Chiasso (via the high tunnel of the St. Gotthard). These are articulated locomotives composed of 2 coupled chassis. Each chassis comprises two traction motors and six driving axles driven by a connecting rod and coupling rods. A central section comprising the current-collecting system, the transformers and the driver's cab rests on the two chassis via toadstools.

It is interesting to note that these locomotives, although electric, actually use the principle of connecting rods which were the basis of traction on steam locomotives. As a result, the electric locomotives will be driven by gears directly on the axles.

The Restaurant offers: Hotspot - Free WIFI, Outdoor terrace, Separate room for seminars and parties, DVD space for children.

The service is continuous: but in order to guarantee a quality and a constant freshness, it is possible that buffets are not available between 3 pm and 6.30 pm.

Pourquoi "Crocodile"?
