Leipzig Hauptbahnhof ist der zentrale Personenbahnhof in Leipzig und steht mit täglich rund 120.000 Reisenden und Besuchern zusammen mit dem Bremer Hauptbahnhof auf Platz 12 der meistfrequentierten Fernbahnhöfe der Deutschen Bahn. Der Kopfbahnhof mit 21 Bahnsteiggleisen (inklusive zwei im City-Tunnel) gehört zu den 21 Bahnhöfen der höchsten Bahnhofskategorie 1 der DB Station&Service und ist mit einer Grundfläche von 83.640 Quadratmetern der flächenmäßig größte Kopfbahnhof Europas. Seine Fassade zur Innenstadt ist 298 Meter breit.
Bezüglich der Anzahl der Bahnsteiggleise wird er nach Rückbauten seit 1996 in Europa vom Frankfurter, Münchner und Zürcher Hauptbahnhof sowie dem Pariser Ost- und Nordbahnhof übertroffen.
Der Hauptbahnhof Leipzig ist im Ballungsraum Leipzig-Halle zentraler Schienenpersonennahverkehrs-Knotenpunkt der S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland. Fast alle ihrer Züge verkehren durch den im Dezember 2013 in Betrieb genommenen City-Tunnel und halten an den Tunnelbahnsteiggleisen 1 und 2.

The 21-station railway station (including two in the city tunnel) is one of the 21 stations of DB Station & Service's highest station category 1 and is the largest head-end station in Europe with a base area of ??83,640 square meters.
