The Marmion family owned the manor of West Tanfield and occupied a fortified manor house near the crossing of the River Ure. In 1387 the property was inherited by the Fitzhugh family. Sir William Fitzhugh is believed to have added the new gatehouse. The tower and manor later passed into the hands of the Parrs, the Cecils (from 1571), the Elgins and the Brudenell family. By 1786 the manor house had gone, leaving only the tower. In 1976 the tower passed into the hands of the state, and is now managed by English Heritage.

The tower is three storeys high and is built of magnesian limestone. A passageway runs through the tower, that would originally have been gated. On the ground floor is a porter’s lodge. The other two storeys contain private apartments. The first floor apartment has an elaborate oriel window, a later probably Elizabethan addition.
