In 1991 the Portuguese Government makes the decision of building a 2nd bridge across the Tagus in Lisbon.
The location chosen was the conection between Sacavém in the north bank and Alcochete in the South. The main intention was to prevent the North/South trafic to cross inside Lisbon and also remove some of that trafic from the 25 Abril Bridge. With the aproach of the Expo 98 it was also the best location to serve the exibition.
The project had a lot of environmental concern right from the beggining and a large environmental program was implemented.
This was one of the top well suceeded projects of the XX century and had international recognition. In 2000 won the 1st prize of the Ibero-American Architecture and Civil Enginiering Institution.
