DESCRIBED BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1956 11.8 MI W FROM APPALACHIA. 8.35 MILES WEST ALONG STATE HIGHWAY 160 FROM THE JUNCTION OF U.S. HIGHWAY 23 AND HIGH SCHOOL AT APPALACHIA, THENCE 3.45 MILE WEST ALONG ROAD FOLLOWING THE TOP OF BLACK MOUNTAIN, 1.9 MILES SOUTHWEST OF CAA RANGE STATION SITE (NOW DIMANTLED), 0.75 MILE SOUTHWEST OF A SAWMILL SITE, ABOUT 78 YARDS WEST OF A SADDLEE ON THE EAST SLOPE OF HILL, SET IN THE TOP AND NEAR THE CENTER OF A FLAT 11 BY 11-FOOT OUTCROP ABOUT 2 1/2 FEET HIGH, 32 FEET SOUTHEAST OF CENTER OF ROAD AND ABOUT 6 FEET ABOVE LEVEL OF ROAD.
1.2 miles SW of the rock formation known as The John Garrison Rock House and 0.9 miles from the Garrison Family Cemetery which are already listed here on the Waymarking site.
As described in the geocaching.com data, starting up the East slope of a hill in a low gap or swag, the Benchmark is in the corner closest to the road of a large flat rock.
"32 FEET SOUTHEAST OF CENTER OF ROAD AND ABOUT 6 FEET ABOVE LEVEL OF ROAD" Sounds about right. The benchmark was under decades of roots and vegetation, other than dirty, it is in good condition.
