The Liebfrauenberg in Frankfurt am Main is at the centre of the northern part of the old town. It is dominated by the Gothic Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauenkirche) and is considered to be one of the most beautiful squares in the city.
In the middle of the Liebfrauenberg is the late baroque Liebfrauenbrunnen, designed by Johann Andreas Liebhardt, build in 1770 by the sculptor Johann Michael Datzerath.
In the centre of an oval fountain basin stands a rusticated obelisk with baroque decorative elements on a square fountain. Here, the river-gods Moenus and Rhenus (Main and Rhine) pour water from the jars into mussel basins, which rest on the crossed bodies of dolphins. The Frankfurter City coat of arms adorns the front of the column. Its top carries a gilded sun.
