The house is located at the intersection of Westford (CT 89) Rd and Pompey Hollow Rd (US44)and is hidden from view by a dense planting of evergreen trees. The Mixer Inn served as a tavern which served as a gathering place for local residents, and long-distance travelers. The home has retained many of its original features, such as the bar-room partition.
John Mixer was Ashford's first town clerk and licensed taverner. The tavern was built by Benjamin Clark, who owned and operated it from 1757 to 1799. It was known as Clark's Tavern. The home then passed to Joseph Palmer, a doctor and brigadier general in the colonial militia.
