Dieser imposante Stein wurde am 12.11.2014 einen Kilometer oberhalb von hier, bei Stromkilometer 619,460 mit dem Tauchglockenschiff "Carl Straat" und dem Hebebock "Ajax" (Schwimmkran) aus dem Flussbett des Rheins geborgen. Der eindrucksvolle Findling mit einem Gewicht von 32 Tonnen befand sich dort eingebettet in Flusskies in der Mitte der Fahr-rinne und musste wegen der Gefährdung der Schifffahrt entfernt werden.
Material
Der Stein besteh aus Basaltlava. Die kleinen zu erkennenden Hohlräume sind zum Teil länglich gestreckt. Es handelt sich um Gasblasen, die in dem erkaltenden Magma eines Lavastroms "eingefroren" wurden.
Herkunft
Bei dem ehemaligen Ort Fornich zwischen Brohl-Lützingen und Namedy, ca. 1 km südlich der Fundstelle, finden sich oberhalb der Bahnstrecke die Reste eines Lavastroms vom Vulkan "Hohe Buche" oder auch "Fornicher Kopf" gemannt. Die Lava hat sich dort in großen Säulen mit imposanten Abmessungen abgeschieden. Unterhalb befindet sich ein Blockmeer mit verstürzten Basaltsäulen. Die riesigen Blöcke reichten vor Ausbau der Bundesstraße 9 bis in das Flussbett des Rheins. Es ist anzunehmen, dass der Findling von dort stammt. Welche Kräfte den tonnenschweren Block einen Kilometer flussabwärts bewegt haben, ist jedoch ein Rätsel.
Alter
Der Vulkan "Hohe Buche" am Rande der Hochfläche oberhalb des Rheins war vor etwa 110.000 Jahren tätig. Der von ihm ausgehende Lavastrom floss als einziger von allen quartärzettlichen Lavaströmen der Osteifel bis zum Rhein. Der Geologieprofessor Ulrich C. Schreiber beschreibt in seinem Roman "Die Flucht der Ameiten" einen fiktiven Ausbruch des Vulkans in der Gegenwart. In den touristisch erschlossenen Steinbrüchen am Vulkan finden sich zahlreiche gut erhaltene Abbauspuren, die bis in die Römerzeit zurückgehen. Der Vulkan ist ein lohnenswertes Ausflugsziel fürgeologisch Interessierte jeden Alters.

This imposing stone was recovered from the river bed of the Rhine on 12.11.2014 one kilometer above here, at the current kilometer 619,460 with the dive-bell ship "Carl Straat" and the lifting-stick "Ajax" (floating crane). The impressive foundling with a weight of 32 tons was embedded there in river gravel in the middle of the fairway and had to be removed because of the endangerment of the shipping.

The stone consists of basalt lava. The small cavities to be recognized are partly elongated. These are gas bubbles, which were "frozen" in the cooling magma of a lava flow.
origin
In the former town of Fornich between Brohl-Lützingen and Namedy, about 1 km south of the place of discovery, the remains of a lava flow from the volcano "Hohe Buche" or "Fornicher Kopf" can be found above the railway track. The lava has deposited in large columns with imposing dimensions. Below there is a block sea with shaded basal columns. The huge blocks reached before the expansion of the federal road 9 into the river bed of the Rhine. It is to be assumed that the foundling comes from there. However, the forces that have moved the block for a few kilometers downstream have been a mystery.
Older
The volcano "Hohe Buche" on the edge of the plateau above the Rhine was active about 110,000 years ago. The lava flow emanating from it flowed as the only one from all the quaternary lava streams of the oestifel to the Rhine. The geology professor Ulrich C. Schreiber describes a fictional eruption of the volcano in the present in his novel "The Flight of the Ampers". In the touristic quarries on the volcano, there are numerous well-preserved pebbles dating back to the Roman era. The volcano is a worthwhile excursion destination for those interested in any age.
