The area of Argyll & Bute covers a wide area of the west coast of Scotland along with a few islands as well. Its highest point is towards the north in shape of the iconic mountain Ben Cruachan, (the mountain of peaks).
The peak is the highest point of a horseshoe ridge to the north of Loch Awe. The mountain is famous for the dam and reservoir at its foot and the hydro-electric power station buried beneath which gives the mountain the nickname of 'The Hollow Mountain'
The mountain can be climbed from the south by a steep path alongside the Falls of Cruachan, then up past the dam and reservoir, before a zig-zagging path climbs west, then north up to the summit which becomes bouldery nearer the top. It can also be ascended in a counter-clockwise direction over the adjoining summits from the east.
The summit area consists of a cairn and remains of a trig pillar, but a large boulder a couple of yards west is the highest point. The views on a clear day cover a vast area of the country.
