The commune of Saint-Gelais is crossed on 4,450 km by the railway linking, at the opening of the line in 1882, Niort to Montreuil-Bellay via Thouars, on the prestigious line Paris-Bordeaux. Travelers arriving at Echiré-Saint-Gelais station were thus able to reach the capital directly! The problem of crossing the valley of the Sèvre is solved by the construction at Chalusson of a viaduct of 56 m. Of length, comprising two arches in metal beams supported on three stacks of stones. Note that from the pedestrian bridge that crosses the central pile, just under the railway, rash bathers once plunged into the river to impress the girls! Bathing prohibited today.

La commune de Saint-Gelais est traversée sur 4,450 km par la voie de chemin de fer reliant, lors de l’ouverture de la ligne en 1882, Niort à Montreuil-Bellay via Thouars, sur la prestigieuse ligne Paris-Bordeaux. Les voyageurs montant en gare d’Echiré - Saint-Gelais pouvaient ainsi gagner directement la capitale ! Le problème du franchissement de la vallée de la Sèvre est résolu par la construction à Chalusson d’un viaduc de 56 m. de long, comprenant deux arches en poutres métalliques en appui sur trois piles de pierres. A noter que de la passerelle pour piétons qui traverse la pile centrale, juste sous la voie ferrée, de téméraires baigneurs plongeaient autrefois dans la rivière pour épater les filles ! Baignade interdite aujourd’hui.
