O Kongsaa encontrava-se a aguardar entrada no porto da Figueira da Foz, para onde navegara para carregar aglomerados de madeira e cortiça, quando por acção de rajadas de vento e forte ondulação, deu à costa na praia do Cabo Mondego, a cerca de 1 km de Buarcos, a 4 de Dezembro de 1985. Em função das graves avarias sofridas durante o encalhe, foi decida a sua demolição no local, que teve início marcado no dia 30 de Janeiro de 1986 no entanto o casco do barco ainda continua no local.
No barco encontravam-se 7 tripulantes.
Nesse dia fatídico 6 dos 7 tripulantes morreram e apenas o comandante sobreviveu.
