Als die Franzosen 1794 in Bonn einmarschierten, veränderten sie das gesamte Stadtbild. Ganze Kirchen rissen sie während der Säkularisation ab. Wie die Innenstadt mit ihren 10 000 Einwohnern davor ausschaute, kann man auf dem Münsterplatz sehen. Dort hat der Rotary-Club Bonn Süd Bad Godesberg zu seinem 50-jährigen Bestehen ein Bronzemodell aufgestellt. Historisch ist es aber nicht ganz korrekt.
"Das Schloss und der Hofgarten stehen noch in ihrer ganzen Pracht da", sagte Historiker Gisbert Knopp. Das Gebäude war nämlich 1777 durch ein verheerendes Feuer völlig zerstört worden. Knopp hatte seit rund anderthalb Jahren mit dem Künstler Friedemann Sander am Modell gearbeitet. "Zeitweise hatte er sogar ein Bett bei mir aufgestellt", sagte Sander. Immer wieder gab es Verbesserungen und neue Erkenntnisse, die umgesetzt wurden. So stammt der Grundriss des Schlosses von erst vor kurzem entdeckten Skizzen aus dem Nachlass eines Wiener Historikers.
Nachdem die ersten Pläne fertig waren, modellierte Sander die Stadt aus Wachs und eine Bodenplatte aus Ton. "Das Münster war dabei mein Orientierungspunkt", sagte er. Lediglich von der im 11. Jahrhundert erbauten Kirche gab es Maße und Zeichnungen, durch die es möglich war, die städtischen Größenverhältnisse im Maßstab 1:500 wiederzugeben. "Nach einer Zeit bekam ich dafür ein Gefühl, dann wurde auch das Münster wieder verändert", so Sander. Der Münsterplatz ist dabei die historische Stadtmitte, umringt von alten Gassen und der Stadtmauer mit ihren Halbtürmen. Es fehlt der dünn besiedelte nördliche Teil der Altstadt, im Süden ist die Grenze auf Höhe der heutigen Beethovenhalle. Auf einer Plakette sind die Informationen zum Modell auch in Blindenschrift angebracht.
Dass am Stadtmodell in Zukunft Führungen anhalten, um die Historie zu erforschen, hofft der Präsident des Rotary-Clubs, Fritz Dreesen. Dem war sich Oberbürgermeister Jürgen Nimptsch sicher: "Bei dieser Schenkung an die Stadt zählt nicht der Preis von 50 000 Euro, sondern die historische Botschaft, die damit vermittelt wird." Für Gisbert Knopp ist es ein "öffentliches Lesebuch für die Stadtgeschichte". Dem Präsidenten im Jubiläumsjahr 2011 und Initiator Hermann Schäfer zeige es, wie "Bonn um das in seiner Einmaligkeit unterschätzte Münster wuchs".
Das komplette Konstrukt aus Sockel, Platte und Bronzemodell wiegt knapp anderthalb Tonnen. "Alles ist fest verankert, damit nichts gestohlen werden kann", sagte Polier Pedro Wachmann, der den rund 500 Kilogramm schweren Sockel mit einem Bagger aufgestellt hatte. Erst kurz vor der Einweihung war er mit den Pflasterarbeiten fertig geworden. "Wenn alle weg sind, muss ich noch mal nacharbeiten."

As the city center with its 10,000 inhabitants before it looked out, one can see on the Münsterplatz. There, the Rotary Club Bonn Süd Bad Godesberg has set up a bronze model for its 50th anniversary. Historically it is not quite correct.
"The castle and the court garden still stand in all their splendor," said historian Gisbert Knopp. The building had been completely destroyed by a devastating fire in 1777. Knopp had been working on the model for about a year and a half with the artist Friedemann Sander. "At times he even had a bed with me," Sander said. Again and again there were improvements and new insights, which were implemented. The sketch of the castle dates from recently discovered sketches from the estate of a Viennese historian.
After the first plans were finished, Sander modeled the city out of wax and a floor slab of clay. "The Münster was my point of reference," he said. Only from the church built in the 11th century were there dimensions and drawings which made it possible to reproduce the urban scale at a scale of 1: 500. "After a time I got a feeling for it, then the Münster was again changed," says Sander. The Münsterplatz square is the historic center of the city, surrounded by old alleyways and the city wall with its half-tower towers. The sparsely populated northern part of the Old Town is missing, and the border is at the height of today's Beethovenhalle. On a plaque, the information on the model is also given in blind letters.
The President of the Rotary Club, Fritz Dreesen, hopes that guided tours of the city model will continue in the future. The mayor, Jürgen Nimptsch, was certain: "This donation to the city does not include the price of 50,000 euros, but the historical message conveyed with it." For Gisbert Knopp it is a "public reading book for the city's history". The president in the anniversary year 2011 and initiator Hermann Schäfer show how "Bonn grew around the Münster underestimated in its uniqueness".
The complete construction of base, plate and bronze model weighs nearly one and a half tons. "Everything is firmly anchored so that nothing can be stolen", said Polier Pedro Wachmann, who had put the 500-kilogram heavy-duty base with an excavator. It was only shortly before the inauguration that he had finished the paving work. "When all are gone, I have to work again."
