Prince Leopold III. Friedrich Franz von Anhalt-Dessau built the Gustavusburg between 1784 and 1786. The building was first used as a dwelling-house and for the storage of equipment for the maintenance of the adjacent floodplains. In 1792 he gave the house to the Swedish headman Baron von Greifenheim. The customary name of Sweden House is due to a gilded relief on the main façade representing the Swedish king Gustav Adolph. Since 1863, the building has been run as an inn, but after the end of its use in 1969 it fell. A first backup of the ruin took place after 1990. With financial support from the state of Saxony-Anhalt, the Kulturstiftung DessauWörlitz was able to acquire the property from private ownership in December 2005 and then repair the existing building fabric and restore the relief with the relief.
