The current Selkirk College building was once home to the Columbia Brewery, built in 1898. It later became an auto shop and is now home to the college.

As the smallest of the half dozen or so Selkirk College campuses, Selkirk College Grand Forks offers Adult Basic Education classes - a variety of programs including skill training and correspondence. They also offer summer camps for kids.

As such it wasn't unexpected that, in 2012, the Grand Forks campus began to offer Prenatal Classes for expectant mothers and fathers.

Selkirk College is excited about its upcoming Prenatal Classes, set to begin Feb. 20 for six weeks.

While Prenatal Classes are nothing new to the College or the community, the instructor, Kristy Kuromi, is.

Kristy, a resident of Grand Forks, is a recently certified Lamaze childbirth educator and has plenty of passion and enthusiasm to bring to the experience.

The mother of two young children, Kuromi says, “I am thrilled to be able to teach Selkirk’s prenatal classes. I absolutely love everything about pregnancy, birth and parenting. I am a complete birth junkie.”

With Kuromi at the helm, the program will include lots of hands on and practice of comfort measures in class.

“Having a baby is such a life-changing experience and I want all women and families to feel confident and empowered through their pregnancy and the birth of their babies,” she says.

Kuromi has been working for BFISS (Boundary Family & Individual Services Society) as an outreach worker since 2006, supporting women and their families through their pregnancy, birthing experience, and early months. She is a DONA-certified birth doula and is now certified as a childbirth educator through Lamaze International.

Lamaze education is based on the best medical evidence available and promotes a safe and healthy pregnancy and birth.

Millions of pregnant women have taken Lamaze classes over the years and while the curriculum is always being updated, Lamaze Prenatal Classes are just as relevant today as they were at their inception 61 years ago.
