The timeline is located on a large information kiosk at the entrance to the ash Meadows NWR Visitor Center.

It outlines the "layers" from about the Cambrian to the Permian periods (500 to 340 million years ago). There are several informative displays on the boards, showing life at the various stages from prehistoric to modern eras.

A condensed "cross-section" of deposits show the differing composition, colouring and fossil activity in each distinctive era.

The main information panel reads:

STORIES IN STONE

More than 500 million
years ago, much of the
Southwest was covered by
a large shallow sea. Life
on land was scares, but
corals, shellfish and algae
thrived in warm ocean
waters.

Over time, calcium carbonate
from skeletal remains - mixed
with mud and sand - compacted
to form sedimentary rock layers
up to 26,000 feet (7,925 Meters)
thick. These rock layers underlie
the valley floor and make up the
mountains to the east, west, and
south of Ash Meadows.

Access to the Visitor Center is by Spring Meadows Road.
Admission fee? (Include URL/link in Long Description to website that gives the current fee): no
