The artist Nicolas Schöffer (*1912 Kalocsa/Ungarn, †1992 Paris) was a Hungarian-born French artist. He was the father of cybernetic art. Nicolas Schöffer was a participant of the documenta II (1959) and the documenta III (1964) in Kassel. The work of art "Chronos 15" stands for "stainless steel, engines and headlights".
Nicolas Schöffer had programmed a computer that kept the mirrors constantly moving. The PC program guaranteed that Chronos 15 would not repeat the same constellation in millions of years. But the 52 motors of the metal mirrors did not tolerate continuous operation. Even the installation of more powerful models remained useless, the city (Bonn) switched off the work of art. The so called "Klimbimtürmchen" was converted to wind power in 1982. Schöffer fought a long time for his high-tech factory and financed the necessary repairs himself, according to the contract with the city (Bonn).
