"Depuis le 19ème siècle, la place du Peyrou est prisée par les touristes et les promeneurs pour ses vastes espaces, ses allées ombragées, sa perspective et la beauté des monuments. Les socles de pierre entourant l’allée haute devaient initialement recevoir des statues d’hommes illustres, contemporains de Louis XIV, qui n’ont jamais été exécutées. Sur les deux socles encadrant l’entrée de l’allée centrale, sont installés depuis 1883 les lions et d’angelots du sculpteur biterrois Jean Antoine Injalbert (1845-1933). Les angelots symbolisent l’amour domptant la force, représentée par les lions."
