Brewing in Prerov has a long tradition that began in the middle ages. Today's company, Pivovar Zubr, was establihsed in 1872 and a year later produced its first batch of beers. The speed that the construction of the new brewery would be noteworthy even by today’s standards. The cornerstone was laid on April 25, 1872, and in less than 13 months, on May 24, 1873, sales were underway from the new brewery. Its name Zubr comes from a heraldic animal of Prerov city, i.e. European bison.
Today the brewery is a modern enterprise with its own bottling plant and malt house. Pivovar Zubr is also, along with breweries Holba and Litovel, part of the PMS Prerov company.
Today in Prerov, beer under the name ZUBR is brewed. This beer is ahigh quality product with an irreplace-able, balanced flavor, which is highly valued by both experts and consumers alike.
Use of the traditional technology of bottom fermenting places the ZUBR label product amongst representatives of traditional Czech beers, which consumers have labeled as a“Czech type beer”. The quality and flavor have brought success right up until today. During 1995 to 2005, ZUBR gained atotal of 19 awards in presti-gious brewery contests, amongst which are the Pivex Gold Cup, Czech Beer, Swedish Beer and Whisky Festival and the European Beer Star. The attained num-ber of medals is unique to the Czech Republic, with lit-erally no competition.
ZUBR has also ranked for years amongst the largest breweries in terms of production volume. ZUBR is exported mainly to European companies (ex. England, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Poland, Austria, Russia, Greece, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden...) and to other countries outside of Europe. The share of export from total volume is 12%. The excellent reputation with the buffalo in the logo is apromise of success long into the future.
