As the plaque reads:
Père Murray
1892-1975
Priest, educator and sportsman, Monsignor (Père) Athol Murray was an inspiration to generations of you Canadians.
Born in Toronto and educated in Quebec, Père was ordained a priest in 1918. Five years later he was sent to Regina as Secretary to Bishop Mathieu and to help foster relationships among English and French Catholics in the Archdiocese, in 1927, Père became Parish Priest at Wilcox. There, in 1933, he founded Notre Dame of Canada, a liberal arts College affiliated with the University of Ottawa. During the difficult depression years, many of his students were allowed to pay their ten dollar monthly tuition in flour, meat or coal.
Père Murray complemented the religious and academic milieu of the college with a vigorous sport program. The Notre Dame Hounds, active in hockey, baseball and football, became one of the more successful and better known college teams in the province. In all their endeavors Père encouraged his students to aim for high standards because of his belief that "Mediocrity Cannot Exist Where The Minds and Heart Insist on Excellence".
