King Christian IV's built this astronomical viewing tower at the request of court astronomer and first professor of astronomy at the University of Copenhagen, Christian Longomontanus. Construction of the tower began on July 7, 1637 and was completed in 1642. It is part of the church and library complex. The church was completed in 1657 and the library in 1657.
The tower was built in the Dutch Baroque style and designed by architect Hans van Steenwinckel the Younger. The Round Tower is now used as an observation tower and a public astronomical observatory. It has an observation deck and small domed observatory on the roof.
