The golf club was originally formed in 1892 and played on a nine hole course in the village of Birnam designed by Old Tom Morris. The present course opened in 1922 as a nine holer on high ground east of Dunkeld at Fungarth. The course was opened by the Duchess of Atholl.
The course was extended to eighteen holes in 2000 with the purchase of land to the east, this includes holes 9 thru 16. A short 3rd hole was added to the original nine and the old 8th and 9th, two short holes, became the new 17th and 18th.
The course commands excellent views of the Perthshire countryside, the opening holes to the west, the newer holes to the east over the Loch of Lowes. The clubhouse and first tee command a spectacular view south-west and the 4th green and 5th tee are at the highest point on the course. The 6th is a spectacular short par 4 over a gully and the 8th green sits high above a grassy cliff. The 9th tee commands the view east over the new holes and the final hole, a short par 3, must be played over the unseen road into the club, which runs along a gully.
The only drawback to the course is the hill climbing involved, especially at the 2nd, 4th, 16th, and final journey up to the 18th green. A buggy would be highly recommended.
