Part of the Victoria Square Environmental Complex.
The building is Adelaide's Catholic Cathedral. It is modelled architecturally upon Baylard Abbey Church in Yorkshire England. Mr Kingston, Survey General, politically astute and active and architect supervised the building. The Cathedral complements the Treasury building opposite, the Law Courts and Police Station all of which are of the Victorian era.
Description
Southern section built 1856-58, Charles Hansom, England, architect with English and Brown builders. Design modified by Pugin and Pugin (architects England) and E J Woods. East aisle and sacristies altered 1887 (Mannion, builder) (architect B P Reynolds client) nave, piers underpinned 1900 (Woods E J architect) (architect B P O'Reilly client) northern section, including tower and completion of nave built 1922-26; W H Bagot architect.
