The Ball Bay area, first settled by Europeans in 1788, is historically important for its associations with significant activities on Norfolk Island. It has a long association with grazing, with land having been taken up by convicts during the First Settlement in the 1790s and early 1800s. Grazing continued during the Third Settlement. Whaling was undertaken from the bay from the late nineteenth century until 1950, and the bay has been an important landing place for supplies for many years, including during the Second World War.
Ball Bay Reserve contains one of only three known populations of the endemic Norfolk Island euphorbia EUPHORBIA NORFOLKIANA.
