This is lock number 5 on the Aston flight of 11 locks in the centre of Birmingham. The Farmer’s Bridge flight of 13 locks takes the canal from its start at Cambrian Wharf to Aston junction then the Aston flight takes the canal down to Salford junction where it meets the Tame Valley and the Grand Union canals.

The locks are all single width, narrow beam locks of approximately 7’ 6” width. The flight has a total rise of 65 feet.

The canal runs 20 ½ miles from the centre of Birmingham in a north, north west direction to Whittington through 38 locks and was opened in 1789. At Whittington, the Coventry canal company took over as the previous company went bust and they continued the navigation up to Fradley junction where it meets the Trent & Mersey canal.
