In Deutschland gibt es noch vier betriebene Zahnradbahnen: die Drachenfelsbahn in Königswinter, die Bayerische Zugspitzbahn, die Wendelsteinbahn und die Zahnradbahn Stuttgart. Von diesen ist die Drachenfelsbahn die älteste noch aktive Zahnradbahn in Deutschland.
Die Drachenfelsbahn wurde 1883 eingeweiht und ist seitdem eine Touristenattraktion am Fuße des Drachenfels in Königswinter bei Bonn. Anfangs wurde die Drachenfelsbahn von Dampflokomotiven gezogen, später wurden diese durch elektrische Triebwagen ersetzt. Die Bahn verbindet Königswinter mit der Aussichtsplattform des Drachenfelses. Die 1,5 km lange Strecke überwindet dabei 220 Höhenmeter, die maximale Steigung beträgt 20 Prozent.

There are still four still operating cogwheel railways in Germany: the Drachenfels Railway, the Bavarian Zugspitze Railway, the Stuttgart Rack Railway and the Wendelstein Railway. Of these four, the Drachenfels Railway ist the oldest still active cogwheel railway in Germany.
The rack railway was put into operation in the summer of 1883. Since then, it is a tourist attraction at the foot of the legendary Drachenfels in Königswinter on the Rhine. At the beginning the Drachenfelsbahn was pulled by steam locomotives, later they were replaced by electric traction units. The line runs from Königswinter to the summit of the Drachenfels mountain at an altitude of 289 m (948 ft).
