Der 1967 neben dem Leuchtturm an der Warnemünder Seepromenade errichtete Einzelbau ist ein prominentes Beispiel für die Hyparschalenarchitektur.
Müthers Schalenbauten bildeten nicht nur eine architektonische Alternative zur kostensparenden Plattenbauweise in der DDR, sie waren auch Prestigebauten und Exportschlager der DDR. Das 1968 mit Erich Kaufmann und Hans Fleischhauer fertiggestellte Seerestaurant Teepott in Warnemünde steht wegen seiner besonderen Dachkonstruktion unter Denkmalschutz.
Das Dach ist eine hyperbolische Paraboloidschale, welche aus drei einzelnen Grundflächen zusammengesetzt ist, und verfügt dadurch über eine hohe Festigkeit. Die Schalenkonstruktion mit einer Gesamtfläche von ca. 1200 m² ist in der Mitte 7 cm und am Rand 10 cm dick. Das Gewicht des Daches ruht auf drei senkrechten Stahlbetonstützen. Die Windkräfte und horizontalen Belastungen übertragen sich auf die schrägen Stützen. Von dem dreigeschossigen Gebäude sind sowohl von der Promenade als auch vom Strand aus die beiden oberen Etagen zu sehen.
Teepavillon
1925/1926 wurde am Strand von Warnemünde die Gaststätte „Teepavillon“ errichtet. Das kreisrunde Gebäude im Stil des Neuen Bauens entstand nach einem Entwurf des Architekten Walter Butzek. Das Baugeschäft Heidtmann stellte bis zum 4. Juli 1925 den Rohbau fertig. Nach verschiedenen Planänderungen, unter anderem der Ergänzung durch eine Terrasse an der Seeseite, wurde am 20. Juni 1926 Eröffnung gefeiert. Der erste Besitzer des „Teepavillons“ war Adolf Fust. Dieser erhielt eine „Erlaubnis zum Betreiben der Schankwirtschaft“ unter der Bedingung, in bau-, feuer-, sitten-, sicherheits-, gesundheits- und gewerbepolizeilichen Aspekten den Forderungen der Rostocker Schankgewerbebehörde nachzukommen. Fust bemühte sich anfangs um die Einhaltung, hatte aber später des Öfteren mit der Polizei zu tun. Schließlich wurde der „Teepavillon“ Eigentum des Rostocker Rechtsanwalts und Notars Curt Helm; von ihm pachtete Fusts Ehefrau Margarete im Juli 1932 die Gaststätte für zehn Jahre und betrieb sie als Konditorei, Café und Tanzdiele. Seit Juni 1942 wurden Mitarbeiter der Ernst Heinkel Flugzeugwerke dort untergebracht. Das Inventar des Gebäudes wurde nach und nach auf verschiedene Institutionen aufgeteilt. Das Gebäude war nun nicht mehr für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich. Am 2. Mai 1945, einen Tag nach Kriegsende in Warnemünde, ging der „Teepavillon“ durch Brandstiftung in Flammen auf und brannte bis auf die Grundmauern nieder. Nach dem Krieg entstand in den 1950er Jahren auf dem Fundament ein Kiosk. Überlegungen, das Areal anderweitig zu nutzen, wurden nicht umgesetzt.
Neubau des Teepotts
Die Hansestadt Rostock bewilligte Mitte der 1960er Jahre die nötigen Mittel für die Wiedererrichtung eines Pavillons auf dem alten Fundament. Der Neubau sollte sich an den zeitgemäßen Stil der West-Berliner Kongresshalle anlehnen. Dazu entwarf der Bauingenieur Ulrich Müther die Schalenkonstruktion, die Architekten Erich Kaufmann, Hans Fleischhauer und Carl-Heinz Pastor vom Wohnungsbaukombinat Rostock entwickelten die Gestaltung und den architektonischen Entwurf der Gaststätte.
Im Januar 1968 fand die Grundsteinlegung für den Neubau der gastronomischen Einrichtung statt. Der Anlass war die 750-Jahr-Feier von Rostock. Der Teepott wurde durch vielfältige Unterstützung von örtlichen Baubetrieben und der Werft in nur sieben Monaten errichtet. Am 6. Juni erfolgte die Übergabe. Während der nächsten Jahre wurde das Gebäude zu einem der Wahrzeichen Warnemündes und fand wegen seiner besonderen Dachkonstruktion Aufnahme in die Denkmalliste der Stadt.
Im September 1985 wurde der Teepott wegen einer umfangreichen Rekonstruktion geschlossen. Es wurden neue Thermoscheiben, Sitzecken und Teppiche eingebaut. Das Café mit 200 Plätzen erhielt eine neue Eisküche, neues Parkett, Stehlampen und Gestühl. Die Eröffnung fand am 28. Februar 1986 statt. Ursprünglich war die Nutzung als Café mit Unterhaltung geplant, aber durch den Mangel an Restaurants in Warnemünde wurde er zum Restaurant umfunktioniert.
Nach der Wende wurde das Haus geschlossen. Das Gebäude ging daraufhin in Privatbesitz, blieb aber weiter geschlossen. Nach neun Jahren Leerstand, mehreren gescheiterten Privatisierungs- und Nutzungsversuchen, fand ein erneuter Besitzerwechsel statt.
Sanierung und Neueröffnung
Der nahezu 34 Jahre alte Bau wurde im August 2001 eingerüstet, entkernt und im Anschluss komplett saniert. Durch das Hinzufügen vieler Zwischenwände kommt die selbsttragende Dachkonstruktion nicht mehr zur Geltung. Müther akzeptierte jedoch diesen Kompromiss, da nur dadurch das Gebäude erhalten blieb. Die Wiedereröffnung fand am 19. Juli 2002 durch den damaligen Ministerpräsidenten Harald Ringstorff und Rostocks damaligen Oberbürgermeister Arno Pöker statt und fand in der Öffentlichkeit große Beachtung. Zu den neu eröffneten Geschäften gehören ein Café, eine Cocktailbar und ein Spezialitätenrestaurant, sowie ein Maritim-Shop und ein bayerisches Restaurant. Bis 2009 war im Kellergeschoss eine Dauerausstellung des Seefahrers Reinhold Kasten zu sehen.
Namensherkunft
Für den Namen Teepott gibt es mehrere Gründe. Der bekannteste ist, dass der Name dem Volksmund entspringt. Bereits 1928 stand an der gleichen Stelle der Teepavillon. Dieser bekam den Namen Teepott wegen seiner Topfform. Auch ist der Name Teepott für die mecklenburgische Zunge etwas leichter auszusprechen. Für den Neubau im Jahr 1968 wurde der im Volksmund gebräuchliche Name einfach übernommen.

The roof is a hyperbolic paraboloid shell, which is composed of three individual bases, and thus has a high strength. The scarf design with a total area of ??approx. 1200 m² is 7 cm thick in the middle and 10 cm thick at the edge. The weight of the roof rests on three vertical reinforced concrete supports. The wind forces and horizontal loads are transferred to the oblique supports. From the three-storey building, the two upper floors can be seen from both the promenade and the beach.
Teepavillon
In 1925/1926 the restaurant "Teepavillon" was built on the beach of Warnemünde. The round building in the style of the New Building was designed by architect Walter Butzek. The construction business Heidtmann finished the shell until July 4, After various changes of the plan, including the addition of a terrace on the lake side, the opening was celebrated on 20 June 1926. The first owner of the "Teepavillons" was Adolf Fust. The latter received a "permission to operate the tavern business" on the condition of meeting the requirements of the Rostock-based licensing authority in terms of construction, fire, gait, safety, health and trade policy aspects. Fust struggled at first, but later he often had to deal with the police. Finally, the "Teepavillon" became the property of the Rostock attorney and notary Curt Helm; Fust's wife, Margaret, bought the restaurant for ten years in July 1932, and used it as a pastry shop, café and dance hall. Since June 1942, employees of Ernst Heinkel Flugzeugwerke have been placed there. The inventory of the building was gradually divided into several institutions. The building was no longer accessible to the public. On May 2, 1945, one day after the end of the war in Warnemünde, the "Teepavillon" was set on fire by incendiary fire and burnt down to the ground walls. After the war a kiosk was built on the foundation in the 1950s. Reflections on the use of the site were not implemented.
New construction of the teepot
In the middle of the 1960s, the city of Rostock approved the necessary funds for the reconstruction of a pavilion on the old foundation. The new building should be inspired by the contemporary style of the West Berlin Congress Hall. Ulrich Müther, designed by the architects Erich Kaufmann, Hans Fleischhauer and Carl-Heinz Pastor of the housing construction company Rostock, designed the design and the architectural design of the restaurant.
In January 1968, the foundations were laid for the new construction of the gastronomic establishment. The occasion was the 750th anniversary of Rostock. Refurbishment and reopening
The nearly 34-year-old building was equipped in August 2001, gutted and then completely renovated. Due to the addition of many intermediate walls, the self-supporting roof construction no longer comes into its own. However, Müther accepted this compromise, as this was the only way to preserve the building. The reopening took place on 19 July 2002 by the former Prime Minister, Mr Harald Ringstorff and Rostock's then Lord Mayor Arno Pöker, and received great public attention. Name origin
There are several reasons for the name Teepott. The most famous is that the name springs from the people's mouth. As early as 1928, the Teepavillon stood in the same place. This got the name Teepott because of its top shape. Also, the name Teepott is slightly easier to pronounce for the Mecklenburg tongue. For the new building in 1968, the common name in the Volksmund was simply adopted.
