The Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Jr., Baptist minister and Civil Rights icon wrote, spoke, organized and marched in support of a nonviolent quest for equality for all. The monument has sixteen quotes
from Dr. King's writings and speeches.

On the statue.
"Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope."
From the "I Have A Dream" speech in Washington, D.C. on August 28, 1963.

"I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness."
This quote was removed from the memorial in 2013.
