The 1936 Winter Olympics, officially known as the IV Olympic Winter Games were a winter multi-sport event which was celebrated in 1936 in the market town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria, Germany. The 1936 Winter Olympics were organized on behalf of the German League of the Reich for Physical Exercise (DRL) by Karl Ritter von Halt. Von Halt had been named President of the Committee for the organization of the Fourth Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen by Reichssportführer Hans von Tschammer und Osten.

The venue of both the Opening and the Closing Ceremonies as well as venue of the Ski Jumping, Cross-country skiing, Nordic combined events was the Olympic ski stadium (Olympia Skistadion) in Garmisch-Partenkirchen called also "Große Olympiaschanze" (Great Olympic Hill). At the 1936 Winter Olympics, the venue hosted the ski jumping event and the ski jumping part of the Nordic combined event. The outrun of the ski jump formed the ski stadium which held the opening and closing ceremonies and the start/finish area of the cross-country skiing competitions. Currently, a world cup competition is held here every year on January 1, as a part of the Four Hills Tournament.
