Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial covers 172 acres and contains the graves of 9,387 Americans most of whom were killed during the invasion of Normandy and ensuing military operations during World War II. Included are graves of Army Air Corps crews shot down over France as early as 1942 and three American women.
The cemetery contains the graves of three medal of honor recipients: Lt. Jimmie W. Monteith of Virginia, T/Sg Frank D. Peregory of Virginia, and General Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. of New York.
At the west end of the cemetery is a semi-circular colonnade the houses the memorial containing maps of the D-Day assault. The monumental sculpture "The Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves" is in the center of the Normandy Memorial at the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, France.
