The focal point of the fountain is a raised niche with a monumental bronze sculpture of Archangel Michael slaying the Devil created by Francisque-Joseph Duret. Flanking the statue near ground level are a pair of dragons sculpted by Henri Alfred Jacquemart.
In 1855 when Baron Haussmann completed what is now called Boulevard Saint-Michel, it left a large open space at its northern end by the River Seine. The Fountain of Saint-Michel was commissioned to fill that space. The fountain was designed by the architect Gabriel Davioud and constructed in 1858–1860.
