Palavas, c’est aussi un port de pêche. Ce sont d’ailleurs les pêcheurs qui ont, depuis 1850, « dessiné » la ville de Palavas, en s’établissant de part et d’autre du canal reliant le fleuve côtier Lez à la mer. La voie fluviale sépare toujours les deux parties de la ville. Il n’existe qu’un pont, à 700 m de la mer pour relier les deux rives. Pour remédier à ce problème, un moyen de transport très original a été installé : le Transcanal.
Grâce à cette installation, la ville de Palavas est l’une des rares au monde ou l’on peut prendre une remontée mécanique en sortant de la plage. Le Transcanal est un petit téléporté équipé de bennes et de sièges, situé à l’extrémité du canal. Il relie la plage Est et les environs du port de plaisance, côté quai Georges Clémenceau, où se trouvent des bars, restaurants et le casino.
Construit en 1977, pour la saison estivale, le Transcanal a remplacé le bac qui assurait auparavant la liaison des deux rives.
Le choix d’un transport par câble s’est imposé à cause de la fréquentation du canal par les bateaux de pêche, qui impose un passage en hauteur d’au moins 6 mètres. Un pont levant aurait été très couteux et peu adapté, un ouvrage fixe peu élégant, car il aurait fallu faire de grands escaliers sur chaque rive et l’ouvrage aurait coupé la perspective sur la mer.
Le Transcanal présente l’avantage d’être une solution légère et facile à mettre en place. Il ne masque pas la vue sur la méditerranée depuis les rives du canal et présente l’avantage d’être ludique. C’est un attrait touristique supplémentaire pour Palavas. Il est surtout utilisé par les estivants, car payant. Il existe un abonnement à l’année mais cela ne séduit pas les habitants de Palavas.
Il remporte un franc succès auprès des enfants, qui l’ont surnommé Mickey !
C’est une vraie curiosité et une fierté pour la ville de Palavas.
Palavas is also a fishing port. In fact, the fishermen have, since 1850, "drawn" the town of Palavas, settling on either side of the canal connecting the Lez coastal river to the sea. Built in 1977, for the summer season, the Transcanal replaced the ferry which used to connect the two shores.
The choice of a cable transport was imposed because of the frequentation of the canal by the fishing boats, which imposes a passage at height of at least 6 meters. A rising bridge would have been very costly and unsuitable, a fixed work not very elegant, for it would have been necessary to make great staircases on each bank and the work would have cut the perspective on the sea.
The Transcanal has the advantage of being a lightweight and easy to install solution. It does not obscure the view of the Mediterranean from the banks of the canal and has the advantage of being playful. This is an added tourist attraction for Palavas. It is mainly used by holidaymakers, because paying. There is a subscription to the year but this does not appeal to the inhabitants of Palavas.
He was a great success with the children, who called him Mickey!
It is a real curiosity and a pride for the city of Palavas.
