The sign is situated on the left-hand side of the road when travelling from Ramsey, near to the Bulgham Rocks Halt on the Manx Electric Railway.
The sign is white with black lettering and a black border. At the top of the sign is a picture of Lonan Old Church. This picture is surrounded by a Celtic design.
At the base of the sign is the information that the Parish of Lonan is "In the Sheading of Garff".
The Isle of Man is divided into 6 Sheadings of which Garff is one. The Sheadings in modern times are only significant as the districts for Conroners and as the basis for certain electoral constituencies.
However, on 1st May 2016 the new authority of 'Garff Parish District' came into being. Previously the Sheading of Garff had three local authorities, Laxey, Lonan and Maughold. The first meeting of the Garff Parish District Commissioners was held on 4th May 2016.
Below the Welcome Sign is another sign noting that Lonan is 'Home of the Lonan Gentlemans' Fellowship World Motorcycling Land Speed Record Holders. This sign has a small oval in the bottom right-hand corner showing the logo of the Fellowship.
