La Tour des Bouchers
(The Butcher's Tower)

English In the 13th century, Ribeauvillé was erected in the city and surrounded by a rampart. It is divided into four quarters which each have their own fortifications: towers allow passage from one to the other. Most of them disappeared in the 19th century, but only the Butchers' Tower, erected between the Medieval City and the Old Town, remains. It owes its name to the butcher activity developed in the houses at its feet. It originally had three floors and was upgraded in 1536, the balustrade of Renaissance style carries the arms of the Ribeaupierre. It served as a belfry and prison. After a fire in 1803, it is badly damaged and its demolition is envisaged but the project will not happen, fortunately.
