A walk up Mt Ruapehu to the Tukino Ski Field will reward you with stunning views of the mountains of the Central North Island and Tongariro National Park from above the Desert Road.

The Tukino Road turns off the Desert Road just north of the Desert Road Summit. This rough 4WD track crosses the Rangipo Desert to the lower slopes of Mt Ruapehu where there is a "carpark" or flattish area cleared to park non-4WD vehicles that are unable to go any further. Keep on the designated road, do not go off-road. Most people will have to park here and walk up the hill. After this carpark, the rough road then climbs the steep slope to the TeleCommunications aerials where there is room for another parking spot near the point where the "Round The Mountain Track" crosses the road. The road is then barred at this point and you will have to leave your vehicle and continue on foot up the steep rough mountain track to obtain even more stunning views of the mountains.
Sensible footwear is required and you should carry warm clothing and a water bottle. This is a mountain area, it could be cold and there may be snow and ice, the weather can change suddenly, so you must Be Prepared.
You can walk further, following the track up along the ridge as far as the Tukino Skifield, about a 12km return walk, but awesome views can be enjoyed from the co-ordinates which are on the corner part way up the first stretch of track. This is a good spot to enjoy a lunch break and take in the views looking across the Desert Rd to the east, and in the opposite direction towards the mountainous peaks of Ruapehu and down into the river valley below. You may be able to spot the waterfall over the rock bluffs higher up near the Tukino Skifield.
