According to the church web site:
In 1880 a Cherokee preacher settled in the Sugar Mound area and started a church. In 1910 the members tore down the original church and used some of the same lumber to build the new church. The church joined the Washington-Osage Baptist Association, which is a member of the Southern Baptist Convention, in 1938, changing its name to Matoaka Baptist Church. Obviously, the original building has been added onto -- probably several times.
