Greek revival house built 1850 by New Yorker Gen. Ebenezer Nichols at Congress and San Jacinto streets. Sold to philanthropist and financier William Marsh Rice, in 1856. Rice, whose estate helped create Rice Institute (now Rice University) in 1912, owned it until 1873. Bought by Mrs. Emma Richardson Cherry in 1897, with a $25 bid on front door. She saved it from demolition and moved it to 806 Fargo. In 1959 it became the first house to be moved into Sam Houston Park and restored.
