Thurber-made paving bricks were initially installed in the business section of Breckenridge in 1923. The Thurber Brick Co., located 50 miles southeast of Breckenridge on I-20, produced the dry-pressed paving bricks that ranked first in the nation for durability under traffic, freedom from decay and dust, and ease of traction. The bricks are 8 3/4 inches long, 4 inches wide and 2 3/4 inches thick.
Eighty-two years later in 2005, the Thurber bricks were removed and cleaned, and reinstalled in the roadbed on Walker Street, between Merrill Avenue and Rose Avenue.
The pedestal holding this plaque is made from the original Thurber bricks installed in 1923 on Walker Street.
