The first state capitol was located in Detroit, the original capital of Michigan, and was relocated to Lansing in 1847, due to the need to develop the western portions of the state. The current Michigan State Capitol, under construction from 1872 to 1878, was dedicated on January 1, 1879 and has served as Michigan's seat of state government ever since. The capitol was rededicated in 1992 after a three-year restoration project.
