Maui and Sons is a retail surf shop on the Venice Boardwalk. This "Flagship" retail store opened in April 2008. The surf shop offers everything from surf lessons and board rentals to boardshorts, rashguards, and everything in-between.
At the Venice Boardwalk store, Maui and Sons has a large figure of a well-ripped, blue-skinned human figure with a sharks head. The figure holds a surfboard. Zippy stopped by to talk with the shark , at first thinking it was the producer of the Sharknado movie. The shark claimed he was the one who started the use of the word "Awesome", replacing "Great". The shark says it came frmo the surfer and valley girl culture from the 1960s to the 1980s. Zippy paused before saying "Cool", assuming it was already out-of-date.
Bill Griffith reuses the panes of a previous strip (adding new dialog), when Zippy visited once before in 2011.
