This monument is dedicated to those who served in the Civil War, specifically for Minnesotans who served, and more specifically for those from the Winona area.
In this park there are monuments for each of the wars. Bricks in the ground around monuments can be purchased and names/ranks of soldiers can be inscribed. A central location has the names, in alphabetical order and the location of the brick.
Front of monument reads: "CIVIL WAR 1861-1865 624,511 Americans died With malice towards none..."
SE side reads: "Minnesota 24,626 Served 4,428 Gave their lives Winona County 856 Served 92 Died"
Back side reads: "Civil Way 1861-1865 A New Birth Of Freedom..."
NW side reads: "That we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain... and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."
This is a very nice memorial. Well done and nicely maintained.
There is a nice park for children nearby, as well as a large bandshell, where, presumably, there are concerts on occassion.
